The calendar year in the United States
contains many holidays.
On Janary 1st, millons of television viewers
world wide watch as the lighted ball drops in New York City's Time
Square, signaling the star of the new year.
Valentine's Day, observed
on February 14th, allows friends and loved ones to show their affection
for one another.
St. Patrick's Day on March 17th honors the Irish
Heritage of many Americans by "the wearing of the green".
Memorial Day,
sometimes known as Decoration Day, is celebrated on the last Monday in
May to commemorate all the members of the armed forces who have died in
past wars.
It is customary on this day to decorate the graves of
American soldiers with wreaths, flowersan flags.
The 4th of July, which
celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence that liberated
the U.S. from British rule, comes midway between Memorial Day and Labor
Day, the first Monday in September, when most American children return
to school after their long summer vacation.
Thanksgiving Day, though,
more than any other holiday, holds a special place in the hearts of most
North Americans.
Thanksgiving Day is an annual, national holiday in the
United States and Canada.
The holiday can be traced back to a time when
the colonists of Plymouth Massachusetts celebrated a successful harvest
and thanked God for all the blessings of the past year with feasting and
prayers.
Though the time-honored meal of turkey and punpkin pie has
become an indigenous part of both countries cultures, each celebrate the
holiday at different times.
